Quick update on finish

Here are my actual results:

In the age group, I was 23rd out of 26 racers.
Overall I was 279 out of 368.

It was definately the biking that killed me. My bike time was slowest in the group and 345th overall. Definately will need a road bike if I do this again next year.

Swim: Group place - 16, Overall place - 170, Time - 16:54
T1: Time - 4:24
Bike: Group place - 25, Overall place - 345, Time - 57:14
T2: Time - 1:37
Run: Group place - 18, Overall place - 171, Time - 43:31, Pace - 8:43

Total Time - 2:03:39

Triathlon Day!!!

So this was the day that I was waiting for. The time when all my training was set to pay off. Here is how it went:

Pre-Race: Woke up at 5:30am and had a breakfast of an english muffin with peanut butter, a banana, and a de-carbonated red bull. It was a good way to start the day. I left the cottage for the park at about 5:50 and was one of the first few cars there. The event was very organized (huge props to Elite Endeavors) and it made it very easy especially for a first time triathlete. I got my number (236) and my goodie bag, grabbed my chip, and headed back to my car. I wasn't sure how the bike number worked, but there was a really nice guy 2 cars over that helped me out and answered some questions that I had. Everyone in the whole triathlon community was super nice which made this a great first experience. After getting my numbers on I took my gear up to the transition and area and started setting up. Laid out my towel, shoes, and socks, pinned my jersey number on, set my bike on the rack, laid out my shirt, and put out my helmet and shades. After that I was ready to go so I threw on my tunes and took my backpack to the car. After a quick visit with Em, Ron, and Judd I was off to warm up and stretch. Then it was time to go.

Swim: I was in the 3rd wave which was scheduled to start at 8:15 but started at about 8:10. I felt ok during the swim but had issues staying in a straight line. Made it to the turn and the crowd had thinned out a bit. I never really got kicked because I started behind the pack. I did get groped a bit at one point. Once I hit the turn, I started picking up the pace and was passing quite a few people from my wave as well as the 2 in front of me which pumped me up. Once I was able to stand, I could heat Em, Ron, and Judd yelling for me which got me going as well. The announcer even said "Here comes Andrew Cavis from Eastpointe looking strong." Then Ron yelled to him that it was my first triathlon and he said something to the effect of "It's his first triathlon and it doesn't look like it. Did he swim in college?" They said "no, hes a math teacher," "A math teacher?!?! Way to go!" That was pretty cool. My swim time ended up being 16:47 I think which was faster than I thought I thought I was going to be.

T1: Transition 1 took longer than I thought it would. There was the run up the hill which took a little bit, plus I took a while trying to get the dirt off of my feet. The whole thing took about 4 minutes and change.

Bike: This was the hardest leg of the race for me mainly because I was on a mountain bike. Almost everyone else was on road bikes and flew past me. On top of that, the course was soooo hilly. It was a brutal ride on my thighs. I did not think that I was going to be able to make it at some points. The volunteer crew members were very supportive and helpful for letting us know which way to go. On my way into the transition from bike to run, I saw Emilee which lifted my spirits. I thought that they were leaving after the swimmers were done. The biking took 57 minutes and change.

T2: The transition was super quick. I racked my bike, sucked down a gel, took off my helmet and shades, stretched my quads, slugged some water, and went. I think the transition was 1 minute and change.

Run: The final stage and it was tough. When they said that it was a "true trail run," they weren't kidding. The whole course was sand, rocks, tree roots, and hills. My legs felt so heavy for the first mile, but by the time I hit the aid station at mile 2 I felt pretty good. I was passing more people than were passing me. It was definately tough to settle into a good pace because you had to dodge roots and manage all of the hills but I was able to do it. At one point, I thought that I was about 2.5 miles in and then I passed the mile 4 marker, so I kicked it into gear for the home stretch. This was the only time that I actually made it a point tot ry and beat someone from my age group. I surged past this guy and made sure that I went hard for about a minute after passing him, it worked. Once I made it up that final hill on Hankerd and could see the Police car at the entrance to the park, I was pumped. The downhill finish was nice and it was great to see all of the people cheering. I finished the run in 43 minutes and change which was better than I had hoped.

My final time was 2 hours, 3 minutes, and change. The was a fantastic experience and I am definately going to do it again next year. I will most likely try other triathlons (maybe the Port Huron one this year). Everyone was amazing and it was a great feeling finishing. I feel like I have accomplished so much and am extremely proud of myself. I was also able to work in a monster nap back at the cottage and rock the hammock :).

Last Bike Ride?

Just under 11 miles (10.9) in 50 minutes and 18 seconds. That was 4 minutes and 36 seconds per mile which would roll me in at 1 hour, 4 minutes, and 36 seconds. I tried a gel today and it was not as bad as I thought it was going to be. Definately going to use one on Sunday, but do I use it before the bike or after the bike? I am thinking right after the bike and before the run. I won't have much to do during that transition anyways.

Nice night for a jog

Well I am inside of 1 week left so it is taper week. I went for a run outside and it felt great. It was warm and there was a slight breeze which made it feel amazing outside. There's just something about a run outside that I love. It's so much better than running inside because you feel like you are actually accomplishing something and getting somewhere.

After council dinner at Grandma's, I ran a loop around 10mile-LittleMack-9mile-Kelly. It took 45 minutes on the nose and lasted for 4.75 miles.

Last long run

Ran today with my last long run before the Triathlon. 7 miles in 1 hour and 5 minutes. That works out to a pace of 9 minutes and 17 seconds per mile. I felt really good actually and I probably could have gone for longer, but I had a stomach cramp the entire time and I wore the wrong socks so I now have a wicked blister on my left achilles. This is my last hard week of training and I am almost within 10 days of the race!!

Cottage Weekend

Not much training this weekend. I was able to get out on my bike on Sunday and ride the hills on Hankered rd. The bike course is going to be tough! Im about to head out for a little run. This week will be a hard training weeka dn next week I taper. Less than 2 weeks to go!

Bike ride before softball

Well I got home...cut the back lawn...trimmed the yards...and then decided to hit the streets. Before I went, I adjusted the front brake. It was rubbing the tire which was probably slowing me down on previous rides. Basically I have no front brake now because I loosened it up enough to not rub the tire.

I rode for 14.37 miles on a loop around Kelly-12 Mile-Jefferson-9mile with some other roads in between. The ride took me 1 hour 6 minutes and 37 seconds. The pace per mile is 4 minutes and 38 seconds. That is much better than I was before.

Results and a Monday long run

I looked up the results from the Parkinson's run and I was 6th overall and 2nd in my age group. Hanson's Race Management added 4 minutes to the top 11 finisher's times (all who made trhe wrong turn). They felt that it would not have effected the results (which it would not have). Here are the results:

http://www.hansonsracemanagement.com/parkinsonfoundation5k/parkinsons5kresults.html

Today I decided to go for a long slow run before Council Monday dinner at Grandma Frederick's. I ran 6.57 miles in 59 minutes and 39 seconds which came out to 9 minutes and 4 seconds per mile (not bad).

Saturday, May 16, 2009

Parkinson's 5k...whoops

So I had the Parkinson's 5k today and I ran very well...if I only I ran the whole 5k. I was in the lead 10 runners and the guys in front of me took a turn too soon and we ended up cutting out about 1/2 mile. I knew something was up when I came across the finish line at 17 minutes and 8 seconds. There is no way I ran that fast. Turns out we should have taken Little Mack all of the way to 9 mile but we turned on Stephens instead...whoops.

Thursday Brick

First brick on my bike and the open road. People do not know how to pay attention to pedsestrians/bikers. This makes me hate riding in the city. Riding in the race without having to stop every 2 blocks for a car that is not looking where it is turning will be great. Despite all of that, I did a 7.5 mile bike ride and 2.5 mile run BRICK in 58 minutes.

Speed Workout

Stupid Treadmills at Bally's! They start shutting down on you at about 30 minutes. I was doing a speed interval workout where I did 10 minutes warm up followed by 1 minute sprint and 2 minute jog then repeat. I was all set to do 10 reps and then finish up with a 5-10 minute cool down jog. Right as I was finishing my 6th rep. it started cooling me down, so I wiped it down as quickly as I could and then shot upstairs to finish on the track. If I had to estimate, I think that I ran for about 45-50 minutes with about 2-3 minutes between treadmill and and track and covered probably about 4 miles. Not bad, my legs are tired.

Bike will be harder than I thought

Apparently the bike will not be as easy as I thought. I did 12 miles in 1 hour today which equates to 5 minutes per mile or 1 hour 10 minutes for the whole thing.

Monday, May 11, 2009

Swim Swim Swim

Waited a while at Bally's for pool lanes to open up (Emilee got hit on by a creepy guy), but finally got in and got a really good work out in.

200 warm up
500 freestyle
2 sets of 4x50 freestyle sprints
150 cool down

Happy Mothers Day

Ran with Ozzie this morning for about 18 minutes. Its hard to do training with him because he is more interested in dogs, squirrels, and his reflection in store windows than lowering my mile splits. Maybe I will run solo from now on. Off to visit mom and the fam in SC.

It's Windy Agnice!

Wow! Just got my bike back from its tune-up yesterday so I wanted to get on it and ride ASAP. I took it out for a ride this morning, but the wind was brutal! I had to down-shift into gears that I didn't even know existed and I still was almost blown to a dead stop by the wind at one point. I went 8 miles and it took 43 minutes and 43 seconds. On the trainer at the gym I have been doing 14 miles in under 40 minutes. I am going to blame it all on the wind and hopefully there is not that much of a difference between riding a trainer and on my bike as far as time goes. Needless to say, I will need to do much more bike training now that I have my bike back.

All I know is that if it is as windy on race day as it was today, I might be in trouble!

FYI: Weather.com says that the wind is 22mph from the southwest and gusting up to 37mph, so that definately slowed me down!!

5/7/09 - One Month Out

I have exactly one month until the Triathlon so I am really trying to get my butt in gear. Yesterday I had softball and had to pick Em up at the airport so there was no real triathlon workout, but softball worked me out a bit (even pulled a muscle in my back gunning a runner down at home from left field).

Today, once it stopped raining, I ran outside. I was tired and did not feel like it, but it was so nice for running, somewhat cool from the rain and no wind, and once I got going my legs felt really good so I made it a little bit longer run. I started off slow and built up my pace as I went. I ended up running 6.25 miles in 58 minutes and 19 seconds. That worked out to a pace of 9 minutes and 19 seconds per mile. This means at today's pace I would have run the 5 miles of the triathlon in 46 minutes and 39 seconds. I feel like that is an accurate guage of where I might be on race day, but we will see. More tomorrow!

Worked in a hill.....

Ran today between work and Council dinner Mondays at Grandma Frederick's house. I ran 4.6 miles in 39 minutes and 17 seconds which worked out to 8 minutes and 32 seconds per mile. I felt like I was flying the whole time. About 13-14 minutes into the run I cut into Huron Park to hit the hill there. Little did I know that the ground before the hill was saturated with water so I also got soaked, but doing the hill was probably good for me to do since apparently the trails on the triathlon are hilly. Em is in Chicago tomorrow and I have softball Wednesday so I need to do something, but I am not sure what yet.

Jefferson loop today

Ran the 5 mile Jefferson loop today (10-Jefferson-9-defer-harper lake-little mack-stephens-home). 46 minutes flat. 9 minutes 10 seconds per mile. Not an ideal time for me, but hey as long as I finish and do not have to stop to walk, I will be very happy with what I have accomplished. Might have time to swim or bike tomorrow morning before Sarah's grad party, but we will see.

yesterday

cut the front lawn...does that count as training?

Thursday, April 30, 2009

Back to running

Ran indoors due to lots of rain. 5 miles in 43 minutes and 18 seconds. Don't have splits in front of me, but I felt faster towards the end which is a good thing.

Wednesday, April 29, 2009

Home sick today

might not be working out today because I do not feel that good(no softball tonight either), but I did work out the past 2 days. Monday I did a BRICK (16 minutes on the spinner and then upstairs for 2 miles on the track). I transitioned in about 1.5 minutes which included wiping down the equpiment.

Yesterday I was in the pool. 36 lengths (0.5 miles) in 18:24. At this point I am not terribly concerned with what place I finish in or what time I finish in, but I want to finish the triathlon without stopping. Anything beyond that is icing on the cake. My bike is in the shop getting a tune up and I will have it back sometime this week so I can hit the road for a long ride this weekend while Em is in Cadillac.

Wow do my legs hurt

I don't know if it is from softball or my run yesterday, but my legs are killing me. It is a good thing that I am getting a massage with Em tomorrow. I had to do something today and didn't feel like going all the way to the gym and it was so nice out, so I had to run outside again. It was rough because of the humidity, the sore legs, and the not healthy lungs, but I went for 2.85 miles which puts me over 10 miles this week. I don't know if I've ever ran that much in one week. I ran it in 27:53 which put me at a pace of 9 minutes and 47 seconds. I felt like I was going faster, but I guess not. Massage tomorrow!!!

Thursday, April 23, 2009

Finally getting back to form

I went for a run today and it felt pretty good. My lungs and legs started burning towards the end, plus my legs were a little sore from softball.

A total distance of 4.84 miles in a time of 41 minutes and 22 seconds. That worked towards a pace of 8 minutes and 32 seconds per mile. This would bring me in at 42 minutes and 44 seconds for my 5 mile race distance. We are down to crunch time!

spinning

Hopped on the spinning cycle on tuesday for a half hour. Then softball game yesterday.

Monday, March 30, 2009

Monday Monday....

5.37 miles outside today...kinda chilly. Ran it in 45:37 which put me at about 8:30 per mile. I did have to stop and wait at a couple busy intersections for traffic to clear (Harper in both directions).

Outside Run #2

Ran outside again today (I love that it is getting warm again). I ran a loop that basically took me around Kelly, Frazho, Little Mack, Stephens, Kelly, 10Mile and then home. MapMyRun said that is was 5.68 miles and I ran it in 46 minutes and 39 seconds. That averages out to a pace of 8 minutes 13 seconds per mile. Which would bring me in during the triathlon (5 miles) in 41 minutes 3 seconds.

If I was able to run that combined with a 19-20 minute swim and a 40 minute bike (+about 5 minutes of transition time) I would have finished in 8th place last year. I know that my running time especially will take a hit during the race, but we'll see how it all goes.

Tuesday, March 24, 2009

past 2 days

Im trying but not doing as well as I would like.

Yesterday I ran for 20 minutes with Ozzie. We just ran in Spindler park and both were tired by the end.

Today I swam race distance at Ballys in 18:34.

Tuesday, March 17, 2009

Cross Training and Today

I suppose you can call it cross training, but I walked Ozzie a few times last week/ran with him in spurts. I also raked the backyard which worked the shoulders a little(I know that is a stretch).

Today was so nice, it was over 60 degrees out. I ran on the mean streets of St. Clair Shores. I forgot to bring my watch so I am not sure how long I ran for exactly. However I started at Emilee's parent's house which is before 9 mile rd and I ran out to Jefferson, and then all the way to 12 mile road and back. According to Mapmyrun.com, it was 7.19 mile, but that did not follow the street paths exactly. Also, the way back was into a farily strong wind, which is good to train with...but sucks big time. Happy St. Patty's Day!!!

3 days and before...

It's been a while since I posted. Last week I was not feeling great (still not 100%, but better than I was), so I only got to the gym 1 day. This week has been much better so far, but I am a little behind on updating my progress.

Monday: This was a running day, but we didn't have a lot of time at the gym. I ran 3 miles in around 26-27 minutes (I think). Then I finished with a good stretch.

Tuesday: Swimming. I swam 48 lengths in exactly 25 minutes. Race distance is 36 lengths or .5 miles. I did the first 1/4 mile in 10:24 seconds and I did the second 1/4 mile in 8 minutes 15 seconds. I think that I might be able to break 17 minutes on the swim, which would be cool.

Wednesday: Speed work. I did a 1 mile warm-up in about 8:45. Then a quick stretch and some water and it was back to the track. My intervals were 3 minutes where I would jog for 2 and run hard for 1. I felt like I was able to work harder on the track with these than on the treadmill because I was really able to open up my stride. I did 10 total repetitions which took 30 minutes. After the 4th sprint I started to cramp so instead of jogging 2 minutes I walked for 1:30 and jogged for :30 with a quick drink in there somewhere. On the rest of the reps, I was all out. I ended with another quick stretch. Emilee was in a fitness class that took an hour so I still had 15 minutes to kill. I went down and hopped on one of the seated (not upright) stationary bikes and did 5 miles in 14 minutes. Today felt good. More tomorrow.

Sunday, March 1, 2009

Yesterday's Brick

Hit the bike at the gym for 20 minutes. Did 7.2 miles. Then I ran upstairs and did 5 miles on the track. Came in under 45 minutes. Pretty tired and sore.

Stupid People

The track was sooooo packed tonight. I cannot wait until it is warm enough to run outside, plus going in circles on that track is getting old. Tonight though, the people walking on the track were 3 wide taking up the whole thing, and jumping out in front of every runner that was coming by. I think the runners were very close to mutinying. Well despite all of that, I was still able to get in 7 miles today (New PR).

mile #1 - 9:01
mile #2 - 18:03 (9:02)
mile #3 - 27:04 (9:02)
mile #4 - 37:09 (10:05) - I was feeling it on this one, plus people were really bad
mile #5 - 46:12 (9:03)
mile #6 - 55:03 (8:51)
mile #7 - 1:03:17 (8:14)

Not bad, I feel like I am improving a lot!

Daytime Workout

Went during the day and did a brick today

9 miles on the bike in 25 minutes exactly
2 miles on the track (Mile 1 - 9:04, Mile 2 - 8:42)

Flood Watch '09

Well my basement is flooding, but I was able to get out for an hour to run at the gym today. I did 6 miles:

Mile 1 - 9:22
Mile 2 - 18:45 (9:23)
Mile 3 - 28:13 (9:28)
Mile 4 - 37:44 (9:31)
Mile 5 - 45:51 (8:07)
Mile 6 - 53:34 (7:43)

That averages to 8 minutes 55 seconds per mile. I felt really good during this run, especially towards the end. I was surprised though when I looked at the splits and saw that I ran a 7:43 for the 6th mile. I didn't think I was going that fast. Back to trying to control the flood.

Oh and yesterday I did the Turbo Jam Ab workout with Emilee.

Tuesday, February 10, 2009

Trying to get back on track

Last night: ran 3.5 miles..started cramping up badly after 2 miles had to walk about 3 laps total. Then went for calf raises, a good stretch, minute push up hold and minute plank hold. Emilee was in the middle of a fitness class so I hit the weight room. I did sets of military, seated rows, back/ shoulder pulldowns, and chest press. Feeling a little sore today, swimming tonight.

Wednesday, February 4, 2009

Back to work

After a slow and somewhat lazy week, I finally hit the gym last night. I did 2 miles hard running in 15:28 and then had a good long stretch. I finished with doing push position holds and plank holds. Not much, but I was limited in time.

Wednesday, January 28, 2009

Did the 5 miles!

I wasn't planning on getting the whole distance in today, but I did. I got close to 4 miles and then decided that I was going to push for 4 1/2. Well on the lap that would have given me 4 1/2 miles, "You're the Best" came on and got me fired up. I kicked it into high gear for the last 6 laps and finished 5 total miles in 40 minutes and change. Woo!

Tuesday, January 27, 2009

Friday
Did a Brick workout today.

This would role me through a 5 mile run in just under 43 minutes.

Wednesday = Swim Day

Ran pretty hard on Tuesday so today I decided to try and do race distance in the pool without stopping. Probably wasn't as fast as I will be on race day, but I was happy with where I was.

Warm-up: 100 freestyle & Stretch

Race distance - 36 lengths = 0.5 miles

I did the distance in 18:18. The first half I finished in 9:13 and the second half I did in 9:05.

Sprint Work - 6x25 freestyle @ 30 seconds
4x25 freestyle @ 30 seconds (had nothing left after 4, I planned on doing 6x25)

Cool-down: 25 breast + 25 free and repeat

Total distance: 1350 yards

I set a time that I am going to shoot for come June. I want to try to finish in under 2 hours. I think that is a good fit with where I currently am timewise.

Tuesday, January 20, 2009

Run day!

3/4 mile warm-up

good stretch + 25 calf raises

3 miles run

mile #1: 8:58
mile #2: 18:17 (9:19)
mile #3: 27:16 (8:59)

kept the timer going and walked a 1/4 mile cool-down for a total time of 32:19 (5:03)

stretch + 50 calf raises

did a total of 4 miles between warm-up, run, and cool-down

looks like right now, if I kept going for 5 miles my pace would average out to between 9-10 miles.

P.S. I have officially registered so I am now fully committed 100% to doing this, especially since I paid money for it ($72!!!!!)

Yesterda's workout

Half mile warm-up.

Ran 1 mile on the track, but the tendon/muscle between my calf and ankle has started hurting when I run. I don't think it is the achilles tendon because it seems like it is a little higher up than that.

Then I did a 40 minute hill workout on the bike. I got 14.17 miles in. I sprinted through the hills at about 120-130 rpm and then down to 100 rpm on the low sections.

Need to figure out what is going on with my legs ASAP.

Wednesday, January 14, 2009

cold cold cold

the temperature outside is hovering around 0 degrees but I still made it in to the gym. Today I worked on the bike for 20 minutes and in the pool for about 30 minutes.

Bike: 20 minute hill workout. Sprint on the hills (>125 RPM) rest on the flats (100 RPM). Got in 7.17 miles.

Swim: 200 freestyle warmup followed by stretch for arms
100 breast
100 back
100 free
100 kick (25 on stomach, 25 on back, repeat)
10 x 25 freestyle on 35 seconds
100 cool-down (50 breast, 50 freestyle)

950 total yards (36 laps - this is exactly how many I will be swimming in the triathlon)

5 minute soak in the hot tub and then home for the night...

Tuesday, January 13, 2009

It has been annouced

The date of the Triathlon has been set: Sunday June 7, 2009. That is the Sunday before my last week with students (but I wish it were the Sunday after).

I missed yesterday due to a massive migraine but was back at the gym today. I ran 3 miles in 25:46.

Mile 1 - 9:00
Mile 2 - 8:10
Mile 3 - 8:36

I need to work on consistency, but that can come later.

It was a kick my ass Thursday at Ballys

Had a training session with Chris tonight and he put me through the ringer.

Started off with 2 timed half miles where I had to try and beat the first time with the 2nd:
#1 - 3:23
#2 - 3:15

Then we stayed on the track and went to station work. Station 1 was core/upper body (Push-ups, Push holds, and Plank holds: each for a minute); Station 2 was wall sits for a minute; Station 3 was Pliometrics (Step up/downs, Side to sides, and straddle jumps); and the last stage was a sprint.

Between each stage I had to jog a lap and then jog to the next station. There were 3 rotations and the last one ended with sprinting a full lap followed by cool down and stretch. Dying on the couch for the rest of the night and watching the BCS National Championship on Fox Sports (Shameless plug).

Tomorrow will hopefully be bike and abs unless I can't get a bike.

Back in the saddle again

Well, after a Christmas break of slacking, it was back to the gym. It was so packed. Today was a running day. I was on the track (no more treadmill as recommended by Jesse) and did 4 miles in 37minutes. That made it a 9:15 mile pace on the dot. Felt pretty good for most of it, but did have to stop twice from cramps to walk a little. Swimming tomorrow and then scheduled training session with one of the Bally's trainers on Thursday.
